Bitcoin has pushed above the $85,000 level, marking a notable recovery after facing pressure earlier in the week. The latest move has shifted market attention toward $87,000 and the psychological $90,000 level, while analysts continue to watch whether spot demand and institutional flows can support the rally.
Nansen Senior Research Analyst Nicolai Sondergaard told crypto.news that Bitcoin’s price has turned bullish faster than positioning among crypto-native traders. According to the analyst, this could leave under-positioned traders with an incentive to chase the rally if prices continue moving higher.
The move above $84,000 appears to have been supported by renewed demand for U.S. spot Bitcoin exchange-traded funds (ETFs) and a large short squeeze. However, some major traders have remained cautious. Data from Hyperliquid showed that its largest Bitcoin traders were still net short even after the latest breakout.
Sondergaard described the situation as a market where price has moved ahead of trader positioning. He noted that Bitcoin’s move above $84,000 looked less like a broad macro-driven accumulation event and more like a combination of renewed ETF demand and short covering.
This positioning could create additional buying pressure if Bitcoin continues to rise. Traders who remain underexposed may need to increase their positions to avoid missing further upside. At the same time, the rally could remain vulnerable if ETF inflows weaken or Treasury yields move significantly higher.
Spot Demand Becomes Important After $85K Breakout
Spot-market indicators have also provided signs that the latest Bitcoin move is not being driven entirely by derivatives trading.
ViaBTC Chief Analyst Jeff Ko said the Coinbase premium returned to positive territory on Friday. The Coinbase premium measures the difference between Bitcoin prices on Coinbase and offshore markets and is often watched as an indicator of demand from U.S. investors.
USDT pricing also strengthened during the weekend. The USDT/USD rate moved from around 0.9991 to 0.9998, bringing the stablecoin closer to its dollar peg. Ko viewed this movement as another indication of improving market demand.
The recovery came after a difficult start to the week. The Federal Reserve raised its benchmark interest rate by 25 basis points to a range of 3.75%–4%. Bitcoin initially dropped toward the mid-$75,000 area before recovering strongly.
U.S. spot Bitcoin ETFs had also experienced significant withdrawals earlier in the week. The funds lost approximately $746.3 million across September 15 and September 16 before recording inflows of about $159.5 million on September 17 and roughly $433 million on September 18.
Friday’s inflows included around $310.7 million for Fidelity’s FBTC and approximately $108.4 million for BlackRock’s IBIT. Across the five-session period, the funds recorded roughly $6.2 million in net inflows, showing that the late-week buying almost offset the earlier withdrawals.
Bitcoin’s Next Levels: $87K and $90K
With Bitcoin now above $85,000, Sondergaard identified $87,000 as the next level to watch. If Bitcoin breaks and holds above that area, the market could then focus on the psychological $90,000 level, followed by potential resistance around $92,000.
The ability to hold these levels could depend heavily on continued spot buying and ETF demand. A rally supported mainly by perpetual futures positions could be more vulnerable to sudden reversals.
Earlier technical indicators had already started showing stronger buying momentum. Bitcoin reclaimed important price areas around $76,660 and later moved through $80,000 and $82,000. More than $250 million worth of short positions were liquidated during the earlier part of the recovery, adding additional momentum to the move.
The four-hour Supertrend also turned bullish near $78,677, while Bitcoin’s daily Relative Strength Index moved above 64. These indicators suggest that momentum has improved, although traders will still be watching whether the price can maintain its gains without excessive leverage.
Treasury Yields and Oil Remain Key Risks
Despite Bitcoin’s recovery, the broader macroeconomic environment remains an important risk factor.
Ko highlighted the U.S. 10-year Treasury yield, the strength of the U.S. dollar and elevated oil prices as factors that could influence Bitcoin during the coming sessions. Higher Treasury yields can make traditional fixed-income investments more attractive, while a stronger dollar can create additional pressure on dollar-denominated risk assets.
Oil prices above $100 could also keep inflation concerns elevated. This could influence expectations surrounding future Federal Reserve policy.
The market will receive additional economic data during the week, including U.S. purchasing managers’ indexes, jobless claims and new-home sales. Several Federal Reserve officials are also scheduled to speak, potentially offering further clues about the central bank’s future rate decisions.
Friday’s quarter-end options expiry could add another source of short-term volatility. However, ETF flows remain one of the key signals investors will be watching to determine whether Bitcoin’s latest recovery has sufficient spot-market support.
ETH/BTC Remains Important for Altcoin Demand
Bitcoin’s strength has not yet translated into a broad-based altcoin rally. Nansen has identified selective demand in areas such as lending, yield products and real-world asset tokens, but Sondergaard described the activity as a tactical risk-on rebound rather than confirmation of a new accumulation cycle.
Ether’s performance against Bitcoin could provide a clearer signal of whether risk appetite is spreading beyond BTC.
The ETH/BTC ratio has remained around the low 0.03 range, meaning Ether has not yet shown decisive relative strength against Bitcoin. A sustained increase in ETH/BTC alongside positive Ether ETF flows could indicate that investors are becoming more comfortable moving into higher-risk crypto assets.
For now, Bitcoin remains the primary focus of the market. The ability to hold above $85,000, attract sustained ETF inflows and maintain positive spot-market signals could determine whether the cryptocurrency advances toward $87,000, $90,000 and potentially higher resistance levels.
