Hunter Biden is set to launch a new political memecoin called $LAPTOP on the Base blockchain on September 9, introducing a token designed around political events, airdrops, conditional burns, and the highly controversial history surrounding the Hunter Biden laptop story.
The announcement came through a short post on X featuring only the ticker and launch date: “$LAPTOP September 9.” Despite the lack of a traditional whitepaper or lengthy project roadmap, the announcement has already generated significant attention across the crypto and political communities.
The token will have a fixed total supply of 1 billion tokens. According to the proposed tokenomics, the supply will be divided among founders, airdrops, operations, and a conditional burn pool.
$LAPTOP Tokenomics
One of the most notable aspects of the project is its founder allocation. Founders, including Hunter Biden, are expected to receive 30% of the total supply, equivalent to 300 million tokens.
However, those tokens will not immediately enter circulation. The founder allocation will be locked for six months following the September 9 launch and will then vest gradually over a two-year period. Under this structure, the earliest founder tokens could become available around March 2027, while the full allocation would not be unlocked until September 2028.
Another 20% of the supply, or 200 million tokens, is reserved for airdrops.
The first part of the airdrop is aimed at wallets that suffered losses from Donald Trump’s $TRUMP memecoin. The second part targets Biden’s Substack subscribers and people on Andrew Callaghan’s Channel 5 mailing list.
This distribution strategy makes $LAPTOP particularly unusual because it attempts to directly target users who participated in another major political memecoin.
A 30% Conditional Burn Pool
Perhaps the most unusual element of the tokenomics is the remaining 30% of the supply.
Around 300 million $LAPTOP tokens will be placed into a conditional burn pool connected to 30 preset real-world events. If certain conditions occur, the corresponding tokens can be permanently removed from circulation.
The conditions reportedly include events such as a Democratic victory in the 2028 U.S. presidential election, Bitcoin reaching a new all-time high, and $LAPTOP surpassing $TRUMP in market capitalization.
If the conditions are not met, the tokens are reportedly intended to be donated to charity rather than returned to the founding team.
This mechanism gives the project a different approach compared with many celebrity and political memecoins, where large allocations can eventually return to insiders.
Why the $TRUMP Token Matters
The launch of $LAPTOP comes at a particularly interesting time for political memecoins.
Donald Trump’s $TRUMP token has experienced a dramatic decline from its previous peak. The token has reportedly fallen roughly 97% from its $73.43 high, while thousands of investors remain underwater.
At the reported price of around $2.25, nearly one million wallets are estimated to have combined losses of approximately $3.81 billion.
The $LAPTOP airdrop therefore appears designed to capitalize on the frustration surrounding the collapse of $TRUMP.
Whether that strategy creates long-term demand remains uncertain. Memecoins are highly speculative assets, and token distribution alone does not guarantee sustainable value.
Why Base Instead of Solana?
Another notable decision is the choice of Base as the launch network.
Solana has become one of the dominant ecosystems for political and celebrity memecoins because of its low transaction fees, fast transactions, and strong speculative trading culture.
Several high-profile political tokens launched on Solana, including $TRUMP and $MELANIA. By choosing Base, the $LAPTOP project is taking a different route.
Base is an Ethereum layer-2 network associated with Coinbase and has developed a growing ecosystem of decentralized applications, DeFi projects, and consumer-focused crypto applications.
The decision could help $LAPTOP reach a different audience while also separating it from the crowded Solana memecoin market.
Copycat Tokens Already Appear
Interest surrounding the project has already created another familiar problem in the memecoin industry: copycats.
Before the official token launch, multiple tokens using the $LAPTOP name reportedly appeared across Base, Solana, and other networks. Some of these unofficial versions have already reached significant market capitalization despite not being the actual project.
This highlights one of the biggest risks surrounding any highly anticipated token launch. Traders may accidentally purchase an unofficial token simply because it uses the same ticker or branding.
Investors should therefore verify the official contract address and blockchain before interacting with any $LAPTOP token.
A Political Meme or a Serious Experiment?
The biggest question surrounding $LAPTOP is whether it should be viewed as another celebrity-driven memecoin or as an experiment in political tokenomics.
The project combines political events, social media communities, conditional token burns, charitable donations, and an airdrop targeting holders of a competing political token.
Its structure is certainly unusual, but unusual tokenomics do not eliminate the risks associated with memecoins. Price volatility, liquidity risks, fake contracts, market manipulation, and speculative trading can still create significant losses.
For now, the September 9 launch is likely to attract considerable attention from both crypto traders and political observers.
Whether $LAPTOP becomes a major political memecoin or simply another short-lived speculative asset will depend on market demand, liquidity, community participation, and what happens after the initial hype fades.
